Dos and Don’ts in Poker
Avoid playing too many hands
Playing too many hands is perhaps the most common mistake in poker and can be expensive as well. In a ten-seat NL-game you should try and see approximately 20% of the flops. In a six-seat game, 30-34%. If the game is too loose and passive, figures may go up and if its aggressive they will go down.
If you have good hands, bet strong
Do not give your opponents good odds on their drawing hands.
Avoid excessive bluffing
as online players tend to call too often. However, semi-bluffing in small and medium pots is likely to get your opponents to fold.
Avoid calling big raises pre flop too often
There are typically very few hands you should call a big pre flop-raise with. You need a very good hand to stay in the pot, and if you have that you should re-raise more frequently.
Observe your opponents
Pay special attention to your opponents’ bluffing tactics. Some players bluff way too much. If you knew them you can call their raises with medium hands.
Change tables
Change tables if you are not enjoying your game or the other players.
Quit if you are having a streak of bad luck
Leave or change tables if you are down with a bad run. Take a break and come back later. Never try to get even.
Keep track of your performance
This is the only way to accurately measuring your success or your losses.
Avoid playing with high limits
Not only are you risking too much there’s also the danger that you will play too passive if you don’t feel comfortable with the stakes. However, it can also be a problem if you are playing too low. If the bets are too small and the money earned even less, it’s hard to focus on playing your best game.
