The History of Pai Gow

Joker CardThe earliest references to Texas Holdem Poker puts its birthplace somewhere in the vicinity of Robstown, Texas, around 1900. In 1925 it turned up in Dallas, Texas, and soon developed a loyal following of dedicated players who promoted its virtues throughout the state.

Texas Holdem moved out of Texas, spread through the middle of the country and beyond and then hit the Las Vegas Strip some 50 or 60 years later. It was introduced to the casinos, the story goes, by Amarillo Slim, and was then transported “across the pond” to England by two colorful English bookmakers. After that, there was no stopping its growth through Europe and the world, and today Texas Holdem Poker is among the most popular card games everywhere.

The Texas Holdem rules are really simple. The game is normally played by between two and ten (no more than a dozen) players, and follows a strict positional betting order as play advances through rounds of wagers, community card dealing and the “burning” of cards, as well. Players, who have already received two hole cards, use the balance of five community cards to form their highest possible hands.

Just knowing the Texas Holdem rules is not enough for success, as the game is based on precise mathematical odds governing the probabilities of card combinations and the changing number of known and unknown cards. As in all Poker variations, there is a psychological component to play, too, so if players know the math they have one advantage, but if they know how to read “tells” — unconscious giveaways about their hands that players commit with changes in breathing, speech and expressions — they have a powerful second leg up on the less experienced.

Poker is a game of skill, which is why some states allowed it to be played in card rooms even casino games were banned. Today, Texas Holdem is everywhere that card players are, and is played in casinos, card rooms, back patios — and, of course, on the Internet. It remains a game of skill, although playing on a computer presents some challenges to the psychological part of a player’s strategy. However, online or on land, there is no doubt that millions of people, professional gamblers and weekend warriors alike, enjoy the thrill, excitement and, certainly, the possible cash rewards that they receive from the game of Texas Hold'em Poker.
